| University Of New Orleans graduate and regular on the jazz
scene, saxophonist Christian Winther steps out on a mix of standards and
original material. Surrounded by well-known names-pianist David Torkanowsky,
bassist David Pulphus, drummer Troy Davis and trumpeter Antonio Gambrell
– Winther takes advantage of the talent with arrangements that focus
primarily on the group. Though this approach may take him out- perhaps
a bit too far out-of the spotlight, considering these musicians it would
be rather difficult to resist and does make for some strongly stated jazz.
With the group narrowed down to a quartet, the saxophonist stand at center
stage and shows his penchant for blowing a sweet ballad on “Body
and Soul.” Another classic “Softly as in a Morning Sunrise”
receives energetic treatment by Winther and the ensemble. Because of the
song’s familiarity, it might have found a better spot than the disc’s
opening number. Winther’s own, compelling title cut, “Perspectives,”
is certainly strong enough to have earned that slot. Ditto for his composition
“Erin’s Song” that races happily along and on which
he takes the first of many fine solos. Torkanowsky and Davis really get “Erin’s Song” poppin’ following Gambrell’s ringing solo and are definitive throughout the album. We certainly appreciate when younger musicians choose to perform the works of New Orleans composers. Winther opts for two superb compositions by the late great drummer James Black, the sway of “Monkey Puzzle” and the edgy “Magnolia Triangle.” Winther and company serve up a plate of solid, stick-to-the-ribs straight-ahead jazz. |
